You might already know that nuts and bolts can be quite useful when compared to other fasteners since they provide a stronger and more secure hold. However, you might not realise just how many different types of nuts and bolts there are out there for you to choose from. These are some examples of the more popular different types of nuts and bolts that you can purchase. It's wise to learn a little more about each type; then, when you're looking for fasteners for a project that you're working on, you will know what to look for.
Zinc-Plated
Zinc-plated steel nuts and bolts are very common. Basically, this means that the steel fasteners have been coated with a thin layer of zinc, which helps with corrosion resistance. Even though the zinc does help with preventing corrosion, you should be aware that the layer is typically pretty thin. This means that although you can enjoy some corrosion resistance with these nuts and bolts, they aren't the most protected steel nuts and bolts you can purchase. Therefore, if you're working on something that is going to be exposed to moisture a lot, or if you're working on an exterior project, then zinc-plated steel nuts and bolts might not be your best choice. If you're going to be using them indoors and don't anticipate them being exposed to moisture a lot, however, they might work out well at a lower price point than some of the other nuts and bolts that are out there.
Hot-Dipped Galvanized
Hot-dipped galvanizing refers to the process of dipping fabricated steel in a bath of zinc that has been melted down. The point of this is to provide superior corrosion resistance. Since these nuts and bolts are covered with a relatively thick coating of zinc, they are ideal for exterior use and other situations in which corrosion is a big concern.
Powder-Coated
Power-coated nuts and bolts often look nice since they're available in white or other colours. However, be aware that even though the powder coating does provide some protection against corrosion, these nuts and bolts aren't as well-protected as hot-dipped galvanized steel nuts and bolts. This means they shouldn't be used outdoors.
As you can see, there are a few different types of nuts and bolts that you can purchase, whether you're going to be using them for residential, commercial, or even industrial purposes. Naturally, in addition to paying attention to the type of nuts and bolts that you're buying, you should also make sure they are the right size for your project. It's not a bad idea to stock up on a few of these different types of nuts and bolts so that you'll always have the right ones for whatever you might be working on at the time.
